Due the ‘global African presence’ historically and the wealth of spiritual knowledge from early classical African civilisations, it is assumed by many ‘black’ people that all spiritual, esoteric, mystic, knowledge comes from ancient kemetic ‘African’ teachings; and therefore are good for spiritual consumption as though it were African – this is a conceptual error. The reality is far more nuance than this. In this presentation Johnson presents an introductionary overview of ‘African spirituality’ and its differences to ‘European esoteric mysticism ‘– they are not the same. Johnson deconstructs and challenges this very idea. In doing so, Johnson break-downs the distinctions between kemetic knowledge, Kemeticism and Hermetic writings.
Many ‘black’ people ‘confused and merge Hermeticism with Kemeticism’ as if they were one and the same. Johnson explains how the modern European spiritual new-age movement with its proliferation of self-help and spiritual -transformational books are not really African in their content – and are a danger to correct development of the African and ‘black-self’.
