Lecture 2: Understanding the historical and political similarities, differences and continuities of race and racism in the UK and US.

It is often said by many ‘blacks’ in the UK that our ‘racialised experience’ in the UK is very different to that of the US. Or that racism is somehow different here in the UK than the US. Yet, this is not correct. In this presentation Johnson charts the imperial links of slavery and colonialism in the North American and Caribbean story of imperialism as ‘white’ Euro-American and ‘white’ European ‘representations of racism’ – as all coming from the same source. This comparative analysis then relates this to the post-colonial condition of ‘black’ and African existence on the globe.
