Join Johnson the author of the acclaimed: The Racism Handbook for People Classified ‘Black’: A Guide to How Racism Really Works Vol I
The question is not if racism is at play, but how is it at play? Therefore, the objective of handbook’s ‘adaptive rules’ is to aggregate the knowledge presented in the handbook to social action.
The workshop discusses some of the handbook’s forty adaptive rules to improve and deal with our communications and social intercourse with people in our daily lives. The rules are based on ‘racial realism’. The purpose of the adaptive rules is to stimulate analysis. Also to develop racial literacy (the handbook’s definition) and racial awareness leading to ‘race consciousness’.
These rules are adaptive. This means that your personal situation may require that you adjust and change these rules to fit your unique circumstances. ‘If this rule works – why does it work? If this rule does not work –why not? why are they effective? If they are effective they will help to develop ‘race-consciousness’ and maintain the ‘black’-self.
Garvey explained, ‘the white race has a system a method, a code of ethics laid down…. to go by, a philosophy, a set creed to guide its life’. So, is a code useful in maintaining the ‘black-self’ in an effort to fight racist oppression?
Participants will:
- Learn why and how the ‘adaptive rules’ were devised
- Learn what is the purpose of the ‘adaptive rules’
- Engage in emergent dialogue about the veracity of certain rules as possible ‘racial universals’.
- Deepen their ability to respond to others or situations that racialised them, and challenge ‘white’ domination.
- Explore real life situations in which some rules were progressive while others were not.
- Have an opportunity to directly engage with and ask questions of Johnson.
